What and if are two words, but when put together they can haunt you for the rest of you life. ‘What if I hadn’t done that stupid thing last night’. ‘What if we had realized what eating a lot of meat would do for the pollution that is terrorizing our world right now’. What if we had done something about the way we throw away our trash’.
‘What ifs’ are able to create regret. Regret that you should have done things differently, that you should have thought more about what could happen. Many people think daily about their ‘what ifs’, moreover they hang on to their ‘what ifs’ from the past. But what would happen if these ‘what ifs’ could be seen as an opportunity. An opportunity to improve, create that situation or become that person that doesn’t have to think about those ‘what ifs’ because they’re turned into an improving point for the future to act upon.
Here are 4 steps to see ‘what if’ as an opportunity for the future and learn from it. An opportunity that will create a person that you want to be or create a situation you want to create.
- Write the ‘what if’ down on paper
Writing it down will help to process the happening and enables you to approach the ‘what if’ rationally.
- Identify what could have been done or could be different.
Thinking about what could have been done or could be differently makes you realize what you might want to change in the future.
- Become aware of the opportunity that the ‘what if’ offers you
Becoming aware of that thing you might want to change makes you aware that you can change it in the present in order to respond or behave better in the future.
- Incorporate the opportunity consciously into present life
Incorporating the opportunity into the present enables you to actually be different than the person you were in the past. Which will help you to be an even greater person in the future.
That even greater person can do great things for the world around him or her. Because once you can see your own ‘what ifs’ as an opportunity, you can see the opportunities of ‘what ifs’ concerning the whole world. You could become aware of the global ‘what ifs’ that could create a better reality if they are seen as an opportunity.
This is one of the things AIESEC offers young people in the world. Encourage youth to change a ‘what if’ into a better future by offering them multiple opportunities. Opportunities to explore themselves and the world around them and will make them aware of the person they can become and the impact they can have by taking action. Behave as a leader the world needs and thereby encouraging others to do so too. Become that greater person they might dream of.
